Success for bronze award pupils during training weekend at Phasels Wood

The fields of Phasels Wood Scout Camp played host to a dedicated group of 181 Bronze Award pupils this past weekend for an intensive and highly successful training expedition. Benefiting from exceptionally clear weather, the cohort participated in their first overnight stay, marking a significant milestone in their journey toward completing their prestigious award. The weekend was designed to equip the group with the essential survival and teamwork skills required for life in the great outdoors, and the pupils rose to the challenge with impressive energy and focus.

Throughout the session, the pupils gained practical experience in setting up a functional campsite, which included the art of pitching tents and mastering the use of Trangia stoves to prepare their evening meals. For many, the experience was an eye-opener regarding the realities of camping, as they navigated the dropping temperatures of an overnight stay and were treated to the early wake-up call of a full dawn chorus. These hands-on lessons in self-sufficiency provided a vital foundation for the challenges they will face in the coming months as they progress through the programme.

On the second day, the focus shifted toward technical navigation, with pupils spending several hours learning the intricacies of map reading and the correct use of compasses. These navigational skills were put to the test across the terrain, ensuring every participant felt confident in their ability to lead their group safely through unfamiliar environments. This training has prepared them well for their next major hurdle, as the group is set to return to the fields on 8th March to embark on their official qualifying expedition.

The school extends its sincere gratitude to The School of Outdoors, whose expert instructors ran the training session and provided the pupils with such a high level of guidance and support. Their professionalism ensured that the weekend was not only educational but also an inspiring experience for all involved. We look forward to seeing our 181 pupils apply everything they have learned when they head out for their final assessment in early May.
