Behavioral Science Bridge Program

Behavioral Sciences Bridge Program

The Behavioral Sciences Bridge program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for pursuit of a graduate degree in behavioral sciences, and especially relevant to students who desire to pursue a degree in clinical mental health counseling or applied sport and exercise psychology. Students who complete the Behavioral Sciences Bridge program will complete 10-14 hours of graduate-level coursework in place of elective requirements within their undergraduate degrees. Students who are subsequently accepted into either the M.S. in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology or the M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs at FHU will be allowed to count these same graduate courses towards their respective graduate degrees. (The courses will be subject to the time limits and all other policies of the M.S. in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology or the M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling degrees.)

Admission to Behavioral Sciences Bridge Program

Students are advised to apply to the Behavioral Sciences Bridge program during the advising period of the spring of their junior year. Students must meet the following requirements for acceptance into the Behavioral Sciences Bridge program:

  1. Declared major in a behavioral sciences degree (Family Sciences, Psychology, or Social Work) OR declared major in kinesiology plus 15 hours of behavioral sciences courses OR any other declared undergraduate major in the university catalog plus 30 hours of behavioral sciences courses.
  2. Complete PSY210 General Psychology and PSY218 Abnormal Psychology with a grade of 鈥淐鈥 or better.
  3. A cumulative GPA of 3.000 or above.
  4. Academic classification as a senior.
  5. Approved application for the Behavioral Sciences Bridge program.

Students admitted into the Behavioral Sciences Bridge program can enroll in a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 14 hours from the following graduate-level courses which count toward the undergraduate electives required for their behavioral science program of study at FHU.

PSY 501 Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology (3)
PSY 502 Techniques and Interventions for Performance Enhancement (3)

Transitioning from the Behavioral Sciences Bridge Program to the the M.S. in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology or M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Programs

Students who have been accepted into the Behavioral Sciences Bridge coursework are encouraged to apply to either the M.S. in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology or the M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. The pathway works as follows:

  1. Acceptance to Behavioral Sciences Bridge program (see requirements earlier in this catalog). Students should apply to the Behavioral Sciences Bridge program during the second semester of their junior year.
  2. Complete the Behavioral Sciences Bridge program requirements during the student鈥檚 senior year.
  3. During the final semester of undergraduate study, the student is advised to apply for early admission to either the M.S. in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology or the M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.
  4. Upon completion of the bachelor鈥檚 degree (including the Behavioral Sciences Bridge program), the student will then graduate with their bachelor鈥檚 degree.
  5. Upon admission into the M.S. in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology or M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, the student will then complete all other requirements of the respective degree.

Note: Successful completion of the Behavioral Sciences Bridge program does not guarantee admission into either the M.S. in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology or the M.S. in Clinical Mental Health program.
