Schools Alumnus triumphs at the BAFTAs

The entire school community is bursting with pride following the incredible success of our distinguished alumnus, Jack Rooke, at the recent BAFTA Television Awards. Jack, who attended St Clement Danes from 2004 - 2010 before embarking on his stellar career as a writer and comedian, took home a prestigious mask for his hit semi-autobiographical comedy series, Big Boys. His journey from our school halls to the pinnacle of the British television industry is a testament to his immense talent, dedication and the creative spark that we remember so fondly during his time as a pupil here.

During his acceptance speech, Jack took a poignant moment to advocate for the very subjects that helped shape his career path. He spoke passionately about the vital importance of maintaining and protecting music and drama departments within the school system. Jack credited these creative outlets as essential lifelines for pupils, describing them not just as extracurricular activities, but as fundamental spaces where young people find their voices, build their confidence, and learn to navigate the world. He emphasised that without the support of the arts in education, many voices like his own might never have the opportunity to be heard on such a grand stage.

Jack’s words serve as a powerful reminder of why we continue to champion the arts. His message resonated deeply with educators and pupils alike, highlighting that drama and music are often the heart of a school’s culture, creating empathy and providing a sanctuary for self-expression. To see a former pupil use such a significant platform to defend the importance of creative education is truly inspiring. We are honoured to count Jack Rooke among our alumni, and we congratulate him not only on his well-deserved BAFTA win but also on his commitment to ensuring the next generation of creatives has the same opportunities to flourish. Jack, the whole school is cheering for you and we cannot wait to see what you achieve next.
