SCD Badminton Tournament 2.0: A Smashing Success!

Following the incredible success of our inaugural tournament last year, the buzz in the sports hall was unmistakable the moment the SCD badminton club started up again this term. Pupils were eager to know if the competition would return, and we were more than happy to make "SCD Badminton Club Tournament 2.0" a reality. This year, the response was overwhelming, with over 90 pupils entering, more than double last year’s numbers. To manage such a large field, we introduced an initial round of competition to seed players into eight divisions of six doubles pairs each. This handicap-style format ensured that everyone, from beginners to our most seasoned players in Divisions 1 and 2, competed against those of a similar ability, giving every single participant a genuine shot at a divisional title.

Because of the record breaking turnout, the competition had to expand beyond our usual Friday lunchtime slot and into Tuesdays as well. It was fantastic to see the hall packed with players and supporters every week as the round-robin matches took place. As the weeks passed, the intensity grew; shuttles were stuck in the roof, strings were broken, and every point was fought for. The top four teams from each division progressed to the semi-finals, which were played as full court doubles in a best of three format to 15 points. These well fought battles eventually gave us our finalists, leading us to the highly anticipated finals day on Tuesday16th December.

The atmosphere on finals day was electric, with over 100 incredibly loud and supportive pupils filling the sidelines. Between the cheers, spectators enjoyed doughnuts to help raise funds for the club, creating a true festival feel. The matches themselves were fabulous, showcasing close fought rallies, thoughtful tactical shots, and impressive teamwork. Beyond the skill on display, the most rewarding part was seeing the sheer amount of fun being had by everyone involved.

An event of this scale requires a massive team effort. A huge thank you must go to our dedicated sixth formers who acted as helpers and umpires each week, especially those who helped manage the "hordes" during the chaos of the finals. We also owe a massive debt of gratitude to Mr. Varsani for his tireless work in organising the divisions and keeping track of the results. Most importantly, Mr. Varsani and I want to thank every pupil who stepped onto the court. Seeing so many pupils playing their best and enjoying the sport is what makes this club so special. Thank you to everyone who made Tournament 2.0 such a smashing success!
