A Year of Theatre: Drama Students Take Centre Stage

It’s been an exciting and enriching year for Drama students at St Clement Danes, with a packed programme of theatrical adventures across all key stages, showcasing the depth, diversity, and power of live performance.

Our A Level Drama students were truly challenged and inspired by a varied range of productions. The year began with a visit to the National Theatre to see The Other Place – a bold and hard-hitting modern reimagining of Sophocles’ Antigone, directed by Alexander Zeldin. The experience was made all the more memorable by Zeldin’s candid and thought-provoking pre-show talk, which left a lasting impression on the group.

Next, students were transported to 1930s Berlin at the Playhouse Theatre’s Kit Kat Club, for a dazzling, immersive performance of Cabaret starring Billy Porter and Marisha Wallace. A complete shift in tone and style, this performance was just as provocative and engaging, broadening the students' theatrical horizons.

In late June, the group ventured further back in time with Arthur Miller’s classic The Crucible at Shakespeare’s Globe. Directed by Ola Ince, this sunset performance vividly brought to life the tense world of the Salem Witch Trials, offering students a powerful and atmospheric experience in one of London’s most iconic venues.

Meanwhile, GCSE Drama students continued the historical theme with a visit to see the smash-hit musical Hamilton. This dynamic retelling of American history received a unanimous five-star review from all who attended – a clear highlight of their drama studies.

To round off the year, Key Stage 3 students journeyed even further back – all the way to Tudor England – to enjoy the energetic and empowering musical Six at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury. The excitement didn’t end when the curtain fell, as the journey home turned into a singalong celebration of musical favourites down the A41!

We are incredibly proud of all our students for the enthusiasm, curiosity, and appreciation they bring to every performance. Their willingness to engage deeply with such a wide range of theatre is what makes Team Drama truly special.

    Charities Week 2025

The halls of ¿ìèÊÓƵ have been buzzing with holiday cheer this week as the annual Charities Week is officially in full swing. As the Autumn Term draws to a close, pupils and staff have united to raise vital funds for three incredible causes: Endometriosis UK, Spread a Smile, and Herts Young ¿ìèÊÓƵless. The school is alive with the spirit of giving, driven by a jam packed ‘Advent’ schedule designed to get everyone involved in the fundraising efforts. This year’s itinerary has been filled with exciting activities, ranging from pupil led lessons and a "Mystery Bucket" challenge to the competitive excitement of the "Elf Auction" and various competitions. Pupils have also enjoyed the classic "Sponge the Teacher" event and a visit to Santa’s Grotto, ensuring the festive atmosphere is matched only by the community’s generosity. Beyond the classroom activities, pupils have been sharing the festive spirit with the wider community. On 18th December, the SCD Senior Choir paid a special visit to Chorleywood Manor Care ¿ìèÊÓƵ. The residents were treated to a beautiful selection of Christmas carols, featuring performances by members of the Chamber Choir, Evensong Choir, and the Barbershop Choir. Year 12 pupils Immy and Chrissie noted that "it was a very joyful occasion and it was lovely to see the residents joining in and looking so happy." The success of such a busy week relies heavily on pupil leadership, and the school extends a massive vote of thanks to Year 13 for their incredible hard work and dedication. Their enthusiasm have been the driving force behind this week's fundraising efforts. The week is set to conclude on Friday with the Grand Finale: the highly anticipated Sixth Form Revue, promising a spectacular end to a week of community, charity and celebration.
